Opal

Opal is a hydrated, noncrystalline form of silica rather than a crystalline mineral. Precious opal shows play-of-color caused by ordered silica spheres and light diffraction; common opal does not show the same effect.

Body colors include white, gray, black, orange, and transparent or crystal forms. Water content and internal structure affect appearance and durability. Natural opal layers can also be used in doublets or triplets.

Australia is a major source of precious opal, with Ethiopia and Mexico also important for different opal types. Opal forms in cavities, sedimentary environments, volcanic rocks, and weathered zones depending on locality.

Smoke, sugar, dye, oil, coatings, and assembled doublet or triplet construction can occur. Ask whether a piece is solid, assembled, treated, or laboratory-grown, and request the exact origin claim in writing.

Cutters orient the play-of-color layer and body tone, often using cabochons. Doublets and triplets can protect a thin layer but are not the same as solid opal. Pendants and earrings are generally safer than exposed rings.

Opal is often associated with imagination, hope, and individuality. Historical beliefs about luck or misfortune are cultural stories, not scientific properties.

Value depends on body tone, pattern, color range, brightness, directionality, thickness, size, origin, treatment, and whether the piece is solid or assembled. Avoid comparing unlike opals by weight alone.

Birthstone and folklore traditions vary. Opal is relatively soft, around 5.5 to 6.5, and sensitive to impact and rapid temperature changes. Avoid heat, harsh chemicals, and ultrasonic or steam cleaning. Follow advice for the exact construction.
